Helping Soldiers Get Rid of Wartime Guilt. Psychological aspects and approaches

Psychologists of the PD and PPV Center provide psycho-prophylactic and psycho-corrective assistance to servicemen and policemen who are being treated at the "TMO of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in the Kirovohrad region". Working with the military, we want to say that it is important to understand that the military finds themselves in situations where they lose their comrades, because of this they may feel guilty.
Guilt can accompany soldiers after surviving conflict situations. They may feel guilty for surviving or that their comrades remained on the battlefield. These are normal reactions to stressful situations and it is important that the military receive support.
      However, there are psychological strategies and approaches that can help push this feeling aside and focus on improving your psychological state and adaptation.
• Accepting reality: It is important to understand that war is an emergency where everyone is doing everything they can to survive. Make sure you did everything you could and accept the fact that the situation was out of your control.
• Group support: Joining a military support group can be helpful. Sharing experiences and talking to others who have experienced similar emotions can ease feelings of guilt.
• Re-establishing social connections: Try to establish and maintain relationships with family, friends and co-workers. It can help you feel important and supported.
• Therapeutic support: Consult a psychologist or psychotherapist with experience. They can help you look at your feelings from different angles and develop strategies to deal with guilt.
• Relaxation and Meditation: Learn relaxation and meditation techniques to help calm your mind and focus on the positive aspects of life.
• Free time: Do what interests you. This can help you focus on positive emotions and feelings of satisfaction.

Remember that overcoming guilt is an individual process and may take some time. Find support from those around you and use the strategies that work best for you.
