What you should know about diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is an area of special attention of the UN. The UN resolution of 20.12.2006, in particular, says: "Diabetes leads to severe complications, which poses a great threat to the individual, family, country, all society and seriously impedes the possibility of achieving the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals". What is alarming is that the number of diabetics in the world is increasing significantly every year, with an annual increase of 3.2 to 3.5%. And this despite the fact that the population of Ukraine is constantly decreasing.

The State Program "Health 2020: the Ukrainian Dimension" covers many important tasks that the health care system and endocrinology service in particular must cope with.

The disease is epidemic all over the world. Today diabetes on a par with atherosclerosis and cancer is one of the three leading causes of disability and death. But many do not even suspect that they have diabetes, and late diagnosis leads to complications of the disease.

There is a stable, but false, notion that diabetes is a disease only for people who like to eat sweets. But this is far from being true.

Some habits and preferences that are not at first glance classified as unhealthy can lead to diabetes, especially type 2.

Here are some of them, the most common and can lead not only to extra pounds in weight, but also to a metabolic disorder in the body and, as a consequence, diabetes.

Recommendations of nutritionists during a day to drink about two liters of fluid do not include the consumption of packet juices or sparkling water. The language is mainly about pure water, not drinks that contain a lot of simple carbohydrates and preservatives, the frequent consumption of which will eventually lead to metabolic failure, and in the long term - to diabetes.

There is a lot of talk around the question, "To eat breakfast or not?" Scientists have already proven that not eating in the morning causes the body to react with disturbed insulin and blood sugar levels, and in the future will lead to the need to make adjustments with medication.

Many people have the habit of eating everything with bread, sometimes even potatoes, porridge, pasta, dumplings and the like. Bread itself is not harmful, especially baked from wholemeal flour and in moderation. But if the consumption of bread is not limited in amount, it leads to an increase in blood sugar levels, which prompts the pancreas to work harder to bring sugar levels back to normal. Systematic work of the gland in this mode will lead to a failure of its function.

In addition, many people are addicted to so-called fast food. This weakness leads to an increase in body weight due to the excessive content of preservatives and salt in this kind of food. All this increases the risk of developing diabetes mellitus.

The modern rhythm of life does not always allow us to follow doctors' advice about eating habits, especially about time to eat in the evening, after work. Often, therefore, a person has dinner at a late hour, after which he immediately goes to bed.

This supposedly innocent habit very soon makes itself felt, because all the processes in the body of late time passes to the slow function, and eating at such a time disrupts the natural secretion of insulin, which in the long term is fraught with the development of diabetes. Therefore, doctors advise eating dinner no later than 3:00 before bedtime.

Health is about looking at daily habits and evaluating how healthy they are. You have to draw conclusions and change everyday behaviors that may be causing illness. Preventing illness is easier than a lifetime of treatment.
