Practical psychologists worked with military personnel using the TAT technique

On November 29, 2022, practical psychologists conducted communication activities in the form of psychocorrection classes using the "Thematic Apperceptive Test" (TAT) technique to preserve and provide psychosocial support to servicemen with emotional disorders (PTSD).

In the face of war and the long-term constant threat of terrorism, Ukrainian military personnel experience extremely intense emotions: restlessness, anger and sadness, characteristic of most people, are a healthy and normal reaction to combat events. But some soldiers can have much deeper reactions to combat.

The duration of stay in the combat zone creates a greater risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the development of which is influenced by:

the use of weapons by a serviceman with lethal consequences even for the enemy;
if the serviceman was a witness to the death of his comrades and the civilian population.
The risk of their appearance applies to younger servicemen, aged 18-24, who have shown symptoms of depression or who have had problems with alcohol.

Some important typical symptoms of PTSD include: Excessive control: compulsively checking doors, windows, vehicles to make sure they are safe. This symptom may be associated with a greater risk of developing PTSD; excessive and dominant feelings of servicemen for their loved ones - parents or children, spouses.

It is worth noting that servicemen transfer to peaceful life a model of behavior that is adequately perceived in the combat zone (heightened alertness, avoidance of open space in connection with possible shelling and the probability of being noticed by the enemy, constant careful assessment of circumstances, sharp emotional reaction in the event of a possible threat ), which leads to possible violations of social norms, incorrect behavior and misunderstanding on the part of society in conditions of peaceful life.

According to the results of the research conducted according to the "TAT" method, such features of the affective sphere of the personality are revealed, such as the identification of leading motives, relationships, values, the identification of affective conflicts, characteristic of the patient's psychological protection mechanisms, the characteristics of a number of individual and personal characteristics (impulsivity - controllability, emotional stability - lability, emotional maturity - infantility), self-esteem of the examinee (the ratio between the ideal and real self, the degree of self-acceptance).

The technique has a special sensitivity to the detection of emotional disorders, allows to diagnose their nature and degree of expression. When analyzing the results of the subjects' implementation of the method in detail, each of the stories was evaluated for each of the above points, and then a summary comprehensive characteristic of the revealed personal and motivational features of a particular subject was compiled.

As a result of psychocorrective work using methods of positive psychotherapy, military personnel developed skills in self-observation of their physical and emotional state, the ability to establish cause-and-effect relationships, with the aim of avoiding in the future those situations or loads that contribute to deterioration of well-being; development of self-control of emotions and behavior (formation of self-organization skills and order of one's life); increasing the general mood background (by finding activities that contribute to this); formation of resistance to failure; externalization of blocked psycho-traumatic emotions.

The result of psychocorrective work is the restoration of servicemen's working capacity and improvement of their quality of life.
