How palm oil affects health

A report by the World Health Organization (February 2019) officially determined that eating palm oil leads to obesity and chronic disease, and its production causes irreparable harm to nature. WHO medics point to a link between increased palm oil consumption in 23 countries and an increase in coronary heart disease mortality rates there.

And the WHO compares the palm oil industry itself to the tobacco and alcohol industries. However, the "palm lobbyists" are trying to prove that the product is harmless.

What is the harm of palm oil?

В чому ж шкода від пальмової олії?

In food production, high temperatures (above 200 degrees), refining and frying vegetable oils and fats produce harmful substances - glycidyl ethers.

Studies conducted by EFSA and JECFA confirmed that glycidyl esters are genotoxic carcinogens.

Glycidyl ethers

- Are carcinogenic to the gastrointestinal tract, liver, skin, breast, sex organs, thyroid, kidneys and lungs;

- one of the causes of children being born with genetic diseases.

Critically dangerous levels of glycidyl ethers have been found in technical palm oil.

As of March 2018, EU food quality requirements went into effect, banning harmful vegetable oils, including palm oil. Many countries still do not have regulations for glycidyl esters of fatty acids, allowing them to be used in food production.

It turns out that many foods contain large amounts of glycidyl esters. Starting with French fries, fried doughnuts, smoked meats and ending with seemingly "harmless" bread, toast and noodles. European scientists estimate that a high concentration of harmful substances is found in snacks such as saltine crackers.
