How to communicate with wounded soldiers

Psychologists working with military personnel and police officers who are undergoing inpatient treatment at the "TMO of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in the Kirovohrad region" in their work encounter requests from relatives and medical personnel with questions about communication with wounded military personnel.

Communication with wounded soldiers requires a special understanding of their situation. We would like to share some important principles that will help you properly communicate with wounded soldiers:

Support and understanding: Wounded soldiers can experience physical and psychological stress. It is important to listen to their stories, show sympathy and understanding. Avoid judgments and criticism.
Respect for privacy: Always maintain confidentiality and do not ask inappropriate or embarrassing questions. Give the injured party control over the level of information they wish to disclose.
Using clear and calm speech: Speak calmly and clearly. Take your time, don't raise your voice, and don't use excessive terminology. Give the injured person an opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings.
Joint activity: Offer help or talk, but give the injured person free choice. Some people may refuse to help or want to talk. It is important to respect their decision.
Recovery Assistance: Ask how you can help a military member recover. Perhaps they need help with household chores or psychological support.
Avoid discussing war: Wounded military personnel may experience severe fatigue from discussing war. Avoid the topic unless they express a desire to talk about it.
Be patient and patient: Recovery can be a long and difficult process. Be tolerant and patient, and don't expect instant results.
Respect for their military experience:  Consider that wounded military personnel can be very proud of their military experience. Respect this and encourage them to talk about their achievements and experiences.
Overall, the key is compassion, respect, and a willingness to provide care that can help wounded soldiers on their journey to recovery and adjustment to a new life.
