Strategies for self-support and preservation of family ties during a war that separated relatives abroad

The war and aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine became a test not only for the country as a whole, but also for many families that became separated. Due to instability and danger, many people were forced to change their lives, leaving abroad in search of safety, men sent their wives and children, and they themselves remained to defend their land from the enemy, to secure the future.
This topic has become relevant because there are those who are waiting for their relatives at home among the employees of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and military personnel of the National University of Ukraine. Dealing with being home alone while your family is abroad can be an extremely difficult situation. Therefore, the psychologists of the PD and PPV Center conduct preventive talks for employees and military personnel, where they discuss the steps to overcome the test and maintain emotional and physical stability:
1.    Keep in touch with family (use all possible means of communication to keep in touch with your family abroad). Communicate regularly by phone, video call, email. Know that they care about you and support you from a distance.
2.    Provide emotional support for yourself. Separation from family can lead to stress and emotional strain. Find ways to help you relax and de-stress, such as exercise, hobbies, journaling. Talk to colleagues who are going through a similar situation.
3.    Develop a schedule and rest plan. It is important to balance work and rest.
4. Get psychological support. Psychological services and consultations are available to you. Don't hesitate to reach out to professionals who can provide you with help and strategies for coping with the emotional challenges of being separated from your family.
5.    Identify your goals and motivation. Remember why you do what you do. Determine your goals and motivation in serving your country. It can be a source of strength and confidence that your work has great value and helps protect people and your family.
6. Follow the regime and discipline. Create a routine, follow work schedules and plan your time efficiently.
7.    Be grateful for the support. Remember that you have support from family, friends, colleagues and compatriots. Be grateful for this support. It can strengthen your relationship.
8. Don't give up on your dreams and plans for the future.

These tips will help you survive being separated from your family during wartime. Take care of yourself and find strength in your loved ones and support around you.
