Combat fatigue and methods of working with it

While being treated at the "TMO of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in Kirovohrad Oblast" hospital, the serviceman consulted a practical psychologist with complaints: decreased productivity, irritability and mood deterioration, inability to concentrate, sleep problems - these are the consequences of combat fatigue (hereinafter - BV) .

Combat fatigue, known as combat stress or loss of vitality, is a physical and psychological condition that occurs as a result of prolonged exposure to situations of excessive physical and emotional stress, especially in the context of military conflicts associated with security services. Combat fatigue can have a variety of symptoms, including physical fatigue, emotional stress, reduced concentration, impaired memory, irritability, anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. It can affect the quality of work, decision-making, reaction to stressful situations and the general state of physical and mental health.

A practical psychologist of the PD and PPV Center conducted an interview during which the soldier was able to express his feelings, the symptoms are related to combat fatigue, and a psychodiagnostic examination was also conducted. According to the psychodiagnostic examination, individual psychotherapy sessions were offered and conducted, where the serviceman was able to deal more deeply with his feelings, thoughts and stressful situations related to combat fatigue. After the completion of psychotherapy sessions, positive dynamics are noted in the form of a decrease in the level of combat fatigue, stabilization of the emotional state, and an increase in self-esteem.

One of the key aspects in combating combat fatigue is maintaining physical and emotional health. Therefore, the psychologist provided some recommendations that can help in this process.

Regular physical training. Physical activity can help improve the general condition of the body and reduce stress levels.
Balanced nutrition.
Regular rest and sleep.
Use relaxation techniques such as meditation or deep breathing to relieve stress and calm down.
Social support: Talking to trusted people, including family, friends or colleagues, can be very helpful in dealing with battle fatigue.
It is also important to remember that while BV may be a normal response to the stress of combat operations, the process of overcoming combat fatigue may take time and require patience. However, if BV is seriously affecting your functioning, it is recommended that you see a psychologist for help. It is important to be open to cooperation with a psychologist, follow the recommendations and actively work on your own well-being. It is not possible to get rid of BV instantly, but with regular self-defense practices and seeking the appropriate support, you may notice an improvement in your condition. In general, the fight against BV requires a comprehensive approach that includes physical, psychological and social aspects. It is important to listen to your body and understand your needs, give yourself permission to rest and protect yourself, and seek support from loved ones. A psychologist will support you at every stage of the process and help you return to a state of physical and psychological well-being.
