Assessment of psychological needs of military personnel: Methods and tools for effective rehabilitation

Military personnel participating in the defense of Ukraine against an aggressor country encounter stressful situations that can affect their adaptation and psycho-emotional state.

Understanding the psychological needs of military personnel and identifying individual factors that affect their mental well-being are important steps in ensuring effective rehabilitation. In this article, the psychologists of the PD and PPV center want to share some methods and tools for assessing the psychological needs of servicemen and analyze the factors that affect their mental health for the purpose of effective rehabilitation.

Methods of assessment of psychological needs:

To assess the psychological needs of military personnel, there are several methods that help to understand their condition and needs. One of them is standardized tests that allow you to assess psychological indicators, such as the level of anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress. These tests provide an objective assessment of the state of servicemen and allow identifying the need for psychological support.

Another method is questionnaires, where military personnel can answer questions about their emotional state, stress level and other aspects of mental health. This allows you to get more detailed and in-depth information about their individual needs.

In addition, interviews and observations are other methods of assessing psychological needs. They allow psychologists to interact directly with servicemen, to observe their behavior and emotions. These methods help gain a deeper understanding of the individual needs and experiences of each service member.

Analysis of factors affecting mental health:

The mental health of military personnel depends on various factors that should be taken into account when assessing their needs. For example, military trauma, stressful situations, long periods of separation from family can affect mental health. Understanding these factors helps psychologists better assess the needs of service members and develop appropriate rehabilitation strategies.

Identification of individual needs:

Each service member has unique experiences and individual needs that must be considered for effective rehabilitation. Individual needs may include psychotherapy for coping with traumatic events, support in rebuilding family ties, training in stress management skills and psychological support. Interviews, conversations and cooperation with the serviceman and his relatives can be used to identify individual needs.

Evaluation results and their use:

The obtained results of the assessment of the psychological needs of military personnel are valuable information for the development of individual rehabilitation and psychological support plans. These results help psychologists better understand the needs of each service member and develop appropriate strategies aimed at improving their mental well-being.

In addition, the results of the assessment can be used to monitor the psychological state of military personnel over time. This allows for changes and progress in their mental health to be detected and rehabilitation programs tailored to their needs.

In conclusion, we can say that assessing the psychological needs of servicemen is an important stage in planning and ensuring effective rehabilitation. It allows you to understand individual needs, identify factors affecting mental health, and develop appropriate support strategies. It helps military personnel to return to normal life and improve their mental well-being.
