How to protect yourself from tetanus

Tetanus is an acute infectious disease affecting the nervous system, causing tonic and tetanic convulsions of skeletal muscles with asphyxiation. It has an extremely high lethality.

War is an ideal environment for the spread of tetanus. This is a dangerous infectious disease that is not transmitted from person to person, but it can be contracted through skin damage. This is facilitated by the increased risk of injuries and limited access to hygiene and medical care.

The bacteria that cause tetanus live in soil, dust, and the intestinal tract of animals. It is possible to get infected even through a tiny scratch, but the probability is much higher after receiving deep wounds (cuts with a knife, animal bites, injury with a piece of wood or punctures with a nail, etc.). Mortality from tetanus reaches 70%.

The causative agent of tetanus enters the human body through the blood. Toxins secreted by bacteria affect the nervous system. Clinical manifestations: weakness, irritability, headache, muscle twitching in the wound area. In the future, muscle stiffness develops, which first appears near the wound and in the chewing muscles (it is difficult for the patient to open his mouth due to short-term spasms and pain), pulling pain, stiffness of the muscles of the neck, nape, back, lumbar area, the face takes on the appearance of " sardonic smile"

Tetanus symptoms appear about a week after infection, but can appear anywhere between 3 days and 3 weeks.

If an infected person does not receive medical attention in time, tetanus can lead to death by suffocation.

The only way to prevent tetanus is vaccination. According to the National Calendar of Preventive Vaccinations, a child receives a tetanus vaccine at 2, 4, 6 and 18 months. Revaccination is required at 6 and 16 years of age. However, immunity is not preserved for life, so revaccination must be repeated every 10 years - at 26, 36, 46, 56, 66 and beyond.

Diphtheria and tetanus vaccines are free of charge in public health care facilities.

It is important to adhere to the National Vaccination Calendar, because this is the only way to maintain adequate protection. If you were not vaccinated as a child or do not know for sure, you must receive at least three doses of the vaccine against tetanus and diphtheria (ADP-M) - first the first dose, a month later - the second, six months after the second - the third.

Check when you were last vaccinated against tetanus. If more than 10 years have passed, be sure to contact your general practitioner at the polyclinic of the hospital (with a polyclinic)  at the address: str. Heroes of rescuers 3, Kropyvnytskyi.

Currently, our institution has a high-quality, safe ADP-M vaccine available.

Take care of your own life and health in advance - get vaccinated.
